Scottish harpist Maeve Gilchrist has been living in the US since she went to study at Berklee School of Music in Boston some ten years ago, and she has carved out a career that's involved her in jazz and American folk styles, as well as retaining her connections with music from back home.
These 11 tracks, including two songs - the self-penned City In The North and the traditional The Twa Corbies - showcase her assured technique as well as her ability to work closely with other musicians, who here include New York-based Scottish bassist Aidan O'Donnel, fiddlers Duncan Wickel and special guest Darrol Anger, and the album's producer, guitarist Roger Tallroth of Swedish masters Väsen. Original compositions capture her inspirations well - it's easy to picture dancer Nic Gareiss creating his magic steps to Sandhunter - and Gilchrist and Wickel's understanding shines through on a fine reading of Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ale Möller's Peerie Joel's Waltz and the atmospheric Nahatlach, with its melodic shades of Shetlanders Fiddlers' Bid.
