Battlefield Band announce dates on home turf

GLOBE-trotting Scottish traditional music ambassadors Battlefield Band next month play their first concerts on home ground since winning the Album of the Year award for their Room Enough for All release at the 2013 MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. They play an Edinburgh Fringe concert at Queen's Hall on August 16 before touring to Findhorn, Glasgow, Stranraer, Irvine, and Lerwick. Then, after a quick trip to the Czech Republic to appear at the Sychrov Highland Games, they return home to play Paisley Arts Centre on September 5 and the Isle of Colonsay on September 11.

Artists on new prize shortlist

TWO Scottish-based artists are in the running for a new £20,000 art prize run by the MAC Gallery in Belfast. Andrew Cranston, for painting, and Jordan Baseman, for film, who are both based in Glasgow, are on the 24-strong shortlist for the award.

An exhibition of the short-listed artists' work, which will run across all three MAC galleries from October 31 until January 18 2015, will feature sculpture, painting, photography, film, installation and performance.

The winner of the £20,000 prize will be announced at the opening ceremony on October 30, 2014.

The free three-month exhibition of the shortlisted artists' work is expected to attract 60,000 visitors.

Taiko drummers to tour country

MUGENKYO, the Lanarkshire based exponents of the Japanese art of Taiko drumming, mark their 20th anniversary with a UK tour in October. With founders who trained in Japan, Mugenkyo have toured rigorously, performing and passing on their skills to establish themselves as one of the most enduring Taiko groups in Europe. The tour opens in Manchester on October 7 and ranges across England before returning to Scotland for concerts at Beacon Arts Centre, Greenock, on October 24 and Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh, on October 25.
