Four stars
The third major Waterboys appearance in Glasgow this year saw them take to the Bandstand stage as part of the Summer Nights Festival, which has featured some of the finest bands and artists from the eighties. The rain had, mercifully, stopped and the sold out crowd was ready to party which seemed to suit Mike Scott and his troops perfectly, because a party is precisely what they proceeded to give.
'This is the night I do whatever you want me to do' Scott announced, always a dangerous tactic in front of a Glasgow crowd, but really, this was classic Waterboys, which was exactly what was required. The mix was not kind to the louder material, which tended to blur into the West End evening sky, but the band were superb throughout, coping admirably, cranking it up as required, but excelling in Scott's more introspective tunes such as the beautiful How Long Will I love You and the excellent And a Bang on the Ear. The Whole of the Moon wrapped up proceedings with both predictable aplomb and at least two thousand or so backing vocalists.
A thoroughly enjoyable evening in what is turning out to be a thoroughly enjoyable festival.
