HeraldScotland taks to Stuart Black about Tories, giant spiders, and lemsips.
It's about those times in life when I've found myself at a crossroads and made life changing decisions. I've been a 'dole scrounger', diamond valuer, software developer, comedian living in a van. It's the world seen through those experiences.
Best thing about the Fringe?
The unique and brilliant atmosphere.
Worst thing about the Fringe?
Sometimes it's the rain. But also burning the candle at both ends and being exhausted.
How many years have you been coming to the Fringe?
Favourite Fringe venue?
The Counting House. I've been trying to get a show on there for years and this year I succeeded.
Best Fringe memory?
Unfortunately that memory is unprintable! But the second best is 2011 my first Fringe after I stopped drinking. It was so much better. It was like the difference between watching black and white TV and a colour plasma screen with surround sound.
All heckles are like someone spitting in your food. So you're asking what is the best spit anyone ever did in your food.
Craziest on stage experience?
I once arrived late at a gig and introduced myself to the promoter. He looked at me a bit strangely and said: but you're already on stage! One of the punters had claimed he was me as a joke and the promoter had put him on. He was dying on his arse, btw.
What's on your rider?
Lemsip & cigarettes
How do you wind down after a show?
I used to get hammered all night but now it's a bit boring but much more healthy. Herbal tea and an early night.
What do you love about Scotland?
Pretty much everything except the weather.
What do you like about Edinburgh?
The buildings are incredible. One of the most beautiful cities in the world.
What's the most Scottish thing you've done?
I once watched a stag group from England being obnoxious and just for a moment I prayed for the re-incarnation of William Wallace.
What kind of jokes do a Scottish crowd seem to respond to?
A good political rant will have them out of their seats - As long as it's not pro-Tory obviously.
I learnt one thing in Australia… Never take LSD in a country that actually does have giant spiders.
Stuart Black will perform his new show 'The Crossroads' at the Counting House on the Free Fringe
