Songs to have modern theme
Hands Up for Trad, the organisation behind the Scots Trad Music Awards and other projects aimed at building public awareness in traditional music, which is seeking submissions for a new Gaelic songwriting competition as part of its Scotland Sings - Renewing The Tradition series.
Entries should be based on an old poem or lyrics that the songwriter renews to reflect modern themes relevant to new singers and audiences.
The winning song will be among the first three entries in the Scotland Sings - Renewing The Tradition Songbook, which will be made available to choirs across Scotland. The deadline for entries is October 31.

Festival opens with the Boys
The first Paisley Film Festival gets under way tomorrow with a screening full of local colour: John Byrne's 1997 screen version of his play The Slab Boys. The writer-director, pictured, will be in attendance at this launch event, which takes place at the Wynd Centre in School Wynd at 7.30pm.
The festival continues on Saturday with a screening of Tim Burton's Batman movie, marking 25 years since the release of the film and 75 years since the character made his first appearance.
Week Two of the festival features Werner Herzog's documentary Cave Of Forgotten Dreams (Thursday September 11, 7.30pm), George Lucas's debut THX 1138 (Friday, September 12, 7.30pm), a screening of The Iron Giant (Saturday September 13, 3pm) and Scottish cult comedy Restless Natives (also Saturday, 7.30pm).

Atlantic are headline stars
Scottish indie-rock band Twin Atlantic, whose third album The Great Divide entered the UK charts last month at No 6, have been announced as headliners of the Loopallu festival in Ullapool. The band will join a 10th anniversary bill featuring Shed Seven, The Undertones, Baby Strange, Alabama 3, Public Service Broadcasting, Neon Waltz, Model Aeroplanes, Vigo Thieves and, on the literary side, Christopher Brookmyre, Aidan Moffat, Vic Galloway, Mairi Hedderwick and Doug Johnstone.
Loopallu takes place on September 26 and 27, and tickets are already sold out.

Anderson set for city gig
Canadian guitarist-singer-songwriter Matt Andersen plays a Glasgow date on his upcoming tour of the UK and Ireland. Anderson has built a formidable following through solid touring and word-of-mouth response across North America and mainland Europe, where he won a 2013 European Blues Award to add to his Best Solo Performer prize at the 2010 Memphis Blues Challenge.
His latest album, Weightless, has been enthusiastically received worldwide and he arrives in Glasgow having already played more than 150 shows this year, including a sold-out solo performance at Toronto's prestigious Massey Hall. He plays the Admiral Bar, Glasgow, on Thursday October 2.
