The Carrying Stream, Edinburgh Folk Club’s annual tribute to the late folklorist and poet Hamish Henderson, goes ahead in various venues in the capital from November 4 to 11.
Performers include the former BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, button-keyed accordionist Paddy Callaghan’s trio, guitarist Tony McManus, singer-songwriter-guitarists Steve Tilston and Jez Lowe, Scots-Gaelic band Barluath, and singers Alison McMorland, Mick West and Margaret Bennett. Dr Raymond Ross gives the annual Hamish Henderson Lecture and there’s an informal singing session hosted by the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland.

Lyth Arts Centre brings a variety of music and drama to Caithness this month. Adventurous Scottish harp virtuoso and Herald Angel winner, Catriona McKay joins improvising guitarist Jer Reid and percussionist Stuart Brown on Wednesday, October 14.
Scottish Opera presents Lissa Lorenzo's fine touring production of Mozart's Cosi fan tutti with Rosalind Coad as Fiordiligi, pictured, on Thursday 15. Musicians from the Scottish Ensemble give a Sunday afternoon matinee performance on the 18th and Eden Court Theatre’s production of Not About Heroes visits Lyth on Wednesday, October 21.

Edinburgh bar Paradise Palms has opened a record shop as part of the venue and is launching a record label to unearth, nurture and promote some the talent that’s emerging on the local scene. The shop will be open on Saturdays and Sundays and the label, headed by local musician Nikki Kent, plans to take on all aspects of artists’ careers including management and touring, licensing and distribution across a broad range of musical styles. www.theparadisepalms.com
The fortnightly Playtime jazz session in The Outhouse in Broughton Street Lane in Edinburgh presents a concert of new compositions this Thursday in the intimate loft space. The Playtime house quartet, Martin Kershaw (reeds), Graeme Stephen (guitar), Mario Caribe (bass), and Tom Bancroft (drums) all compose and have written pieces in a variety of styles, each reflecting the composer’s individuality, specially for the occasion. The music begins at 8pm.
