Shetland Folk Festival has announced the first names booked for its 36th edition, which takes place across the islands from April 28 to May 1. Tuvan throat-singing specialists Huun-Huur-Tu are the farthest travelled act followed by a Canadian contingent of Quebec’s De Temps Antan, Ontario old-time trio Sheesham & Lotus & Son and Prince Edward Islanders the East Pointers, Americans Laura Cortese and The Dance Cards, from San Francisco, and Colorado bluegrass troupe the Railsplitters, and Belgians Wör. Also appearing are Irish accordionist Alan Kelly, Glasgow-based swing ensemble Rose Room, Gaelic folk-rockers Mànran, Scots-Irish-Cape Breton quartet The Outside Track, Caithness fiddler Gordon Gunn, and up and coming young Scottish groups Talisk and The Elephant Sessions.

Saxophonist John Burgess is launching a series of monthly concerts celebrating the great jazz pioneers at the Outhouse in Broughton Street Lane, Edinburgh. Best known as the leader of early jazz specialists the Nova Scotia Jazz band, Burgess has formed a new quintet for the series, comprising Ross Milligan (guitar and banjo), Campbell Normand (piano), Bill Brydon (bass), and Tom Bancroft (drums) and the first three concerts will focus on the music of Louis Armstrong (February 4), Bix Beiderbecke (March 3), and Jelly Roll Morton (April 14). All concerts begin at 8pm.

Glasgow-based songwriter Finn Anderson plays a series of Scottish dates in February to launch his new EP, Uncharted Lands. With a background in writing for and directing theatre productions and composing for film projects, Anderson is a self-taught pianist and accordionist with an MA from Goldsmiths in London. He recently completely a UK-wide house concert tour and plays An Tobar, Tobermory on February 13, The Steeple, Newburgh (15th), and Byre Theatre, St Andrews (16th) then moves on to play dates in England before returning to Glasgow to appear at Project Café on February 28.

Edinburgh promoters Click Clack have returned to their former chosen night of Thursday and stage their first event of 2016 on January 28 featuring a triple bill promising jazz, funk and gentle madness. Bassist Dave Conway’s Jazzanoia provide jazz grooves. Various Moons, featuring singer-guitarist Colin Donati and cellist Robin Mason, present their singular style of songwriting and Strictly Confidential, featuring saxophonist Don Kelman, guitarist Iain Carleton, bassist Ron Butlin, and drummer Desmond Travis, bring the funk to Henry’s Cellar Bar in Morrison Street. Doors open at 7pm.
