Gritty Australian prison drama Wentworth Prison returns to UK screens tonight for what promises to be another turbulent season for the teal-wearing inmates at the women's correctional centre.

While most of the media hype has focused on American prison drama, Orange is the New Black - Netflix's most-watched original series - Wentworth has much to offer, if not more, in terms of intricate storylines and complex characters.

A gritty drama and mystery series rolled into one, Wentworth, which is based on the 1980s late-night cult Australian show Prisoner Cell Block H, is just as good, if not better.

Much like Orange, Wentworth began with the incarceration of a first-time offender. But instead of smuggling drugs for her lesbian lover, Bea Smith (Danielle Cormack) was sentenced to Wentworth Prison for the attempted murder of her abusive husband.

Three seasons later, Bea now finds her position as top-dog threatened, not just by newcomer Kaz Proctor (Tammy Macintosh) and the now, ex-Governor, Joan Ferguson (Pamela Rabe), but by those she trusts the most.

Season four also finds newly-released Franky Doyle (Nicole da Silva) struggling to find her way on the outside despite the support of prison forensic psychologist, Bridget Westfall (Libby Tanner).

The pair were last seen finally admitting their feelings for one another when Bridget surprised Franky on the day of her release - fulfilling Franky's dreams of being "picked up by a hot girl in a hot car" and driving off into the sunset.

Logie Award-Winning actress Libby Tanner recently visited Glasgow and Birmingham with fellow Wentworth castmate, Sally-Anne Lupton (Juicy Lucy) as part of two ScreeenStar hosted events for fans.

"The reception has been fantastic. The writers are on fire and cast are dancing just as hard. We are all so thrilled to be a part of Prisoner's iconic reimagining," she said about season four, which has been airing since May in Australia.

The Herald:

The show has been sold to over 20 countries and has spawned keen interest on the Internet, the most notable of which is a weekly video blog called 'Talking Teal'.

The Vlog, created by Liron Cohen and Mimi Torchin, is a spin-off from their weekly video blog series, Lady Parts - aimed at celebrating and encouraging quality representations of women on television, both in front of and behind the camera, as well as critiquing low-quality representations, which have an enormous impact on female self-esteem, body image, self-definition and life goals.

"When we first posted our special Vlog dedicated to the season three finale of Wentworth, one of our favorite television shows, we couldn't have imagined the response," admits Liron Cohen.

"Since we loved the interaction with the fans, we invited them to email us their own analysis of the episodes every week, so that we could incorporate them in our Vlog, and the responses were quite mind-blowing. The insights and observations, coming from people with completely different perspectives (due to the cultures they come from, their own life experience, or their profession) enriched our show so much."

"To that, we add our expertise in the history and the workings of the craft of television-making, and our own knowledge and life experiences, and what we get every week is a thrilling hour of a shared discussion that is not only a celebration of a fantastic show for which we all share a deep appreciation, but also an invigorating critique that has proven to be quite popular among some of the Wentworth cast and crew."

Liron has recently graduated with a unique BA in Journalism and US Media and Culture (with a specialty in television and women studies), while Mimi holds the distinction of being the founding editor-in-chief of the successful magazine, Soap Opera Weekly. She has also hosted the Daytime Emmy's red carpet show on E! for a number of years.

The couple recently interviewed Jet Wilkinson, who directed episodes five and six of the new season and count several of the Wentworth creative team and cast as fans.

One of those fans includes Libby Tanner, who appeared on an episode earlier this year while on a visit to New York: "I love watching Lady Parts and their Talking Teal Vlogs," the actress confessed.

"After each Wentworth episode, the fans get to further their viewing experience as the girls present worldwide feedback - fuelled with passionate possibilities and projections of these beloved characters and their plotlines. Talking Teal's concise and humorous reflections invite the Wentworth fandom to share in a tasty bowl of cherries!"

Talking Teal has been getting bigger and gaining more viewers every week.

Some viewers have even said they wait for a new Talking Teal just as much as they wait for a new episode of Wentworth.
