BLUEGRASS-and-beyond group The Hot Seats return to Scotland this month for a series of concerts. The group, formerly known as Special Ed & the Short Bus, won a Herald Angel at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2008 and have since become hits at events including Celtic Connections, Shetland Folk Festival, and Hebridean Celtic Festival for a blend of music that has seen them described as the love children of bluegrass founder Bill Monroe and Frank Zappa. They play Fringe by the Sea in North Berwick on Thursday, August 11 before going on to Dundee (13th), Irvine (14th), Edinburgh (15th), Kilbarchan (16th), Birnam (17th) and Peebles (18th).

THE PLAYTIME Collective, which features in the fortnightly jazz sessions that run throughout the year at the Outhouse Bar in Edinburgh, has added two extra nights to the Broughton Street Lane venue’s extensive Fringe programme. The group, comprising saxophonist Martin Kershaw, guitarist Graeme Stephen, bassist Mario Caribe and drummer Tom Bancroft, will draw on past tributes to jazz icons such as Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett and original compositions that have been premiered in Playtime sessions when it performs in the Outhouse loft on August 11 and 12. Both concerts begin at 9pm.
