An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power (PG) ***

Dirs: Jon Shenk, Bonni Cohen

With: Al Gore, Barack Obama

Runtime: 98 minutes

MORE than ten years after his double Oscar-winning warning on climate change, former Veep Al Gore is back on the road. As this new documentary shows, he has never been away, continuing to educate activists so that they too can spread the word. While still warning of the dangers (“Every night on the evening news is like a nature trek through the Book of Revelations”) he has a positive message about cheap green energy. The big orange elephant in the room, however, is the election of Trump as climate change denier-in-chief – an event that, while acknowledged, is not given the attention it merits.

The Odyssey (PG) ***

Dir: Jerome Salle

With: Lambert Wilson, Pierre Niney, Audrey Tautou

Runtime: 120 minutes

UNDERWATER explorer Jacques Cousteau is given the full biopic treatment by Jerome Salle, and at two hours long, I do mean full. Salle tells the Frenchman’s story largely through the prism of his sometimes troubled relationship with his younger son, Philippe (Pierre Niney), with Cousteau (Lambert Wilson) shown flaws and all as a man determined to do things his way. The Odyssey covers familiar ground, including Cousteau’s long career as an inventor, as well as putting a fresh perspective on his career as a pioneer of reality television. As you would expect, the scenes below the sea are stunningly shot, with the sequence of Niney swimming with sharks awesome.
