THE Edinburgh International Children’s Festival has opened, and runs until June 3.

The festival, produced by the Edinburgh-based theatre company Imaginate, includes 14 productions from 12 countries.

More than 5000 school pupils are expected to take part over the week.

Noel Jordan, director, said: "In a year where Scottish children’s theatre has been under threat while being praised globally, the Festival is a great opportunity to celebrate our home grown talent.

"It is also a unique opportunity to welcome the best of what the world has to offer onto our Edinburgh stages for local audiences to enjoy."

There are still tickets for sale for most shows, especially over the final weekend (1-3 June).

THE Macrobert Art Centre in Stirling has appointed Scotland's first BSL (British Sign Language) director trainee.

Peter Dobre is soon to graduate from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and will be starting the end of May.

The post has been devised for an emerging director who uses BSL to help them pursue a career in performance.

He will be allocated time with actors from the BA Performance in BSL and English at the RCS and mentoring from Julie Ellen, director of the Macrobert.

The one year traineeship is a result of funding from Creative Scotland in the designated Year of Young People.
