Hereditary (15) ***
Dir: Ari Aster
With: Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff
Runtime: 127 minutes
PUBLICITY for writer-director Ari Aster’s supernatural horror, a hit with the indie crowd and critics at Sundance, promises a picture that will terrify you into next week. The reality is more ho-hum. Mum Annie and dad Steve (Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne) are slowly putting the pieces of family life together again after her mother’s death. Mother was a “difficult” sort, says Annie in the funeral address, and the couple and their children are about to find out how. Has moments to wobble the collys, and makes sharp points about motherhood and duty, but as the hysteria mounts the credibility fades.
Super Troopers 2 (15) **
Dir: Jay Chandrasekhar
With: Jay Chandrasekhar, Brian Cox, Rob Lowe
Runtime: 95 minutes
TALK about a long-awaited sequel. Jay Chandrasekhar’s original comedy about knuckle-headed state troopers was released 18 years ago. Whatever the crew have been doing in the meantime it is not polishing the script to this follow up. The gang, including Brian Cox as hapless Captain O’Hagan, is back again, this time to ensure the smooth transition of a part of Canada into the USA. Cue lots of of Canadian v American jokes that do not travel well. As compensation for the chuckle-free script the camaraderie between the chums is engaging, an under-used Cox is a blast, and Rob Lowe raises a smile as a Canadian mayor.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
