Chris Drummond, director of the award-winning The Aspirations of Daise Morrow, which has its UK premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe answers our questions.

  • Tell us about your Fringe show

This show is deeply Australian. The Aspirations of Daise Morrow is a word-for-word adaptation of a Patrick White short story. Staged in an immersive world, the audience sit around a small clearing beneath a canvas Australian sky – inside the Spiegeltent! – with a string quartet seated amongst them as the actors moving all around them telling the story of the funeral of the scandalous Daisy Morrow.  It’s up close, hilarious and heartfelt.

  • How does it feel to be playing the Fringe for the first time?

We’re really excited to be bringing this very Australian world to Edinburgh for our Fringe debut. The Aspirations of Daise Morrow sits in another time and place, a bit like a dream it’s transporting and otherworldly, so placing that in amidst the hullaballoo of the Edinburgh Fringe is going to be a really beautiful thing.

  • Why did you decide to perform at the Fringe?

Audiences want to be taken into new worlds. The Aspirations of Daise Morrow will be such a departure from whatever else is likely to be on offer – the immersive, intimate, low-fi immediacy of the show is a gift to audiences; sitting inside Zephyr’s exquisite music, up close to these magnificent actors and sinking into White’s extraordinary text.  It’s a pretty potent brew.

  • Favourite thing about being in Edinburgh?

This is my first time. Can’t wait!

  • What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?

I haven’t done it yet but I’m planning on getting a tattoo with the Drummond Clan Crest. Maybe I’ll get it done while I’m in Edinburgh! Gang Warily!!

  • Favourite Scottish food/drink?

The humble scone and a neat Scotch whisky. Not necessarily together.

  • Sum up your show in three words

Funny. Magical. Moving.

Show summary

Australia's towering literary genius Patrick White's language is pure performance in this richly theatrical adaptation. Actors, musicians and audience share the space beneath a canvas of Australian sky. The work shifts and swirls, drawing the audience into the immediacy of a strangely familiar world – the suburb of Barranugli – where the Whalley family are getting ready for a day at the dump, while next door the Hogbens prepare to bury the scandalous Daise Morrow.

The Aspirations of Daise Morrow is on at Assembly George Square Gardens - Palais du Variete, from August 2 - 12 (except 8th).
