Ruaraidh Murray talks about his new comedy show, The Club.
Tell us about your Fringe show
My new play is a dark comedy called The Club. Think Phoenix Nights meets the Sopranos. It’s set on one night in London’s Legendary 90s club, The Tardis. If you were there you wouldn’t remember anyway…George is facing closure unless he pays the mother of all rent demands. Fortunately, The Tardis is having THE party of the year tonight. Only problem is, George is also due money to feared gangster Dave Sharky, who’ll stop at nothing to crash the party for himself.
Best thing about the Fringe?
The best thing about the Fringe apart from performing to audiences is eating whatever I want i.e a posh burger topped with haggis and chips on the side every evening in the Gilded Balloon loft bar (I believe this beauty is called a Balmoral Burger).
Worst thing about the Fringe?
The worst thing about the Fringe is the point where I start having a black pudding pizza as a side with my Balmoral Burger and chips.
How many years have you been coming to the Fringe?
This is my fifth year in a row performing at the Fringe. No more burgers this year Ruaraidh okay?...Ruaraidh?
Favourite Fringe venue?
My favorite Fringe venue is the one and only Gilded Balloon.
Best Fringe memory?
My best Fringe memories are Sam Simmons performing his show About the Weather in 2012 and Lucie Pohl performing her show Hi Hitler in 2014. Can’t wait to see both their new Fringe shows this year!
Best heckle?
My best heckle(I hope this counts) was when I had a guy in the front row projectile vomit right at the end one of my shows. Fortunately he half-directed it towards the wall.

Craziest on stage experience?
My craziest stage experience was at the Gilded Balloon 2014 where I had to graphically simulated having sex in a cleaners cupboard in a Wetherspoons pub during my show Boxman while various members of my family were in the audience. Sorry mum! My aunty came to see the same show with her NYC pals this year in New York. Definitely broke the ice for our after show drinks!
What’s on your rider?
Watching Knight Rider is on my rider.
How do you wind down after a show?
I wind down after every show with ten grammes of coke. Only kidding, just seven.
What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?
The most Scottish thing I’ve ever done is to fly to Vienna last Christmas in my kilt to avoid checking in a bag. I was asked to take my kilt off at Vienna International Airport security. When I informed them I was a true Scotsman they decided not to take the matter further and let me go straight through.
What kind of jokes do a Scottish crowd seem to respond to?
A Scottish crowd respond to very, very dirty jokes or very, very, silly ones.

Favourite joke?
My favorite joke is: What’s the difference between Bing Crosby and Walt Disney? Bing sings but Walt doesnae.
Favourite Scottish food/drink?
My favorite Scottish food is Deep Fried Curly Wurly. My childhood pal Souness swears he invented it in 1994 at the L’Alba D’Oro chippy on Henderson Row in Stockbridge.
