Maddy Anholt talks about her new show Rent Girl.

1 Tell us about your Fringe show

Maddy Anholt is a Rent Girl. She’s been a Rent Girl for the last ten years, spending over £136,000 on rent. The fact is that by 2025 only 26% of young adults will be on the housing ladder. That means 74% of us will be rent boys and rent girls by 2025. Rent goes up and up and our salaries stay the same so we don’t have much choice in the matter.

It all started in 2009 when Maddy first came to London from a remote countryside town to try and build her empire. She put up an advert looking for work: “Young, fresh girl seeks any part-time work… excellent typing and oral skills”. You can imagine the responses she got.

Rent Girl is Sliding Doors meets Pretty Woman… was she better off taking the job as a children’s entertainer ending up with two broken toes, or should she have sold her underwear for £800 a pop to pay her rent?

2 Best thing about the Fringe?

Amazing connections with people that you’d never normally meet.

3 Worst thing about the Fringe?

Edinburgh Fringe jetlag for the majority of September.

4 How many years have you been coming to the Fringe?

This will be my third. Apparently third is the best.

5 Favourite Fringe venue?

Gilded Balloon, obvs.

6 Best Fringe memory?

It was in 2014 when I was given a diamond necklace as I came off stage (not a euphemism) then in 2015 I drank with Eddie Izzard. Winner.

7 Best heckle?

“Where’s your Dad?” I don’t even know what that means. I guess that I look young?

8 Craziest on stage experience?

Last year there was one day my venue was so hot that a woman threw up in her hands halfway through the show. Unfortunately she was wedged at the end of a row so couldn’t get out. Chaos.

9 What’s on your rider?

Case of San Pellegrino sparkling water, excessive amounts of sushi and Tanqueray gin. I’ve changed.

10 How do you wind down after a show?

I like to have a chat with the audience to get feedback. Unless it’s gone very badly then I’ll sit in the dark backstage until everyone’s gone and run.

11 What do you love about Scotland?

That people actually smile. Smile. I forget what that looks like living in London.

12 What do you like about Edinburgh?

Amazing charity shops, I love them.

13 What’s the most Scottish thing you’ve done?

Gone commando.

14 What kind of jokes do a Scottish crowd seem to respond to?

I think Scottish crowds like jokes specific to them, but that’s the same with anywhere. Doing a little research shows you care, ya know.

15 Favourite joke?

“There’s a lot of benefits to being in the UK. Literally a lot of benefits” Tez Ilyas

16 Favourite Scottish food/drink?

Hotchpotch

Maddy Anholt will perform Rent Girl at the Gilded Balloon until August 29.
