Borg McEnroe (15) ***

Dir: Janus Metz Pedersen

With: Sverrir Gudnason, Shia LaBeouf

Runtime: 108 minutes

RELIVE the Wimbledon men’s single final of 1980 in this drama from Danish director Janus Metz. While the match was pitched in the media as a battle between the cool, efficient Swede and the hot-headed, foul-mouthed New Yorker, Metz’s picture shows Borg and McEnroe had more in common than was thought. Borg’s story proves to be the more eye-opening, largely because so much is already known about McEnroe, while Sverrir Gudnason, playing Borg, wins the lookalike battle and LaBeouf the acting one. But with so much to cover even before we get to the marathon final, Metz’s drama is a five-setter of a movie that would have been brisker as a footage-led documentary.

In Between (15) ****

Dir: Maysaloun Hamoud

With: Mouna Hawa, Shaden Kanboura

Runtime: 101 minutes

THERE is something at once familiar yet groundbreaking about Maysaloun Hamoud’s drama. Ostensibly, it is just another tale of three young women sharing a flat and each other’s joys and troubles. But since the flat in question is in Tel Aviv, and the three are Palestinians, whatever happens comes laden with complexities. Leila, Sana, and Noor all want to live the life they want, yet at every turn the men in their society are laying down the law. Can any of the women escape the ties that bind? Though the drama goes to some bleak places, what bubbles through in the end is hope that things can change.
