“IT’S so boring to say all this,” sighs Vivienne Westwood as Lorna Tucker’s documentary opens. Other designers might revel in the chance to have a film advertise their brand for free, but the godmother of punk clothing has always done things her way. While Westwood’s spikiness is on display here she is gloriously her own woman, and a perceptive one too. When Tucker’s film inevitably turns to the Sex Pistols (“I can’t be bothered with them either”) she concludes about punk’s ultimate impact, “We weren’t attacking the Establishment, we were just part of the distraction.” The clothes are pretty gorgeous too.

The Third Murder (15) ***

Runtime: 125 minutes
A VICTIM lies dead. A man looks on, his face dotted with blood. An open and shut case of murder? No such thing according to Hirokazu Koreeda’s Japanese drama. Masaharu Fukuyama plays a lawyer, Shigemori, whose client confesses early on and looks certain to face the death penalty. But the more Shigemori investigates the killing, the more he suspects that all might not be as it seems. Koreeda’s legal drama wears away at its subject like water dripping on a rock, which will not suit everyone’s patience, but if he hooks you early on be ready for a riveting watch.
