Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (12A) ***t
Dir: J. A. Bayona
With: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeff Goldblum
Runtime: 128 minutes
NOW five films in, the old formula of dinosaurs, dastardly hunters and the human heroes who save the day should be running out of puff. But Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard coming on board in 2015 gave it fresh legs and together with director JA Bayona they manage to squeeze a few more thrills out of it again here. This time, the dinos are in peril from a volcano. Former park manager Claire (Dallas Howard) is offered a sanctuary for them, and with her old flame Owen (Pratt) in tow, all that remains is getting the beasts from A to B. As if it was ever going to be that simple. All together now, RUN!
The Boy Downstairs (12A) ***
Dir: Sophie Brooks
With: Zosia Mamet, Matthew Shear
Runtime: 89 minutes
SOPHIE Brooks’ slight but appealing comedy drama is set in the kind of New York where no one seems to have a well paid job yet they live in lovely apartments while figuring out what to do with their lives. Zosia Mamet (Girls) plays Diana, a budding writer who moves back to the US after a stint in London, only to find the flat she has found is upstairs from her ex-boyfriend. Mamet is very watchable in a Greta Gerwig kind of way, but mention of the Lady Bird writer-director is a reminder of how difficult it can be to do this sort of light as a feather, but emotion packed, comedy drama well. A promising debut.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
