The Troubles, a collaboration between New Zealand-based musicians and players from the Scottish jazz and traditional music scenes, play a concert in the Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh on August 15 before concluding their Edinburgh Fringe run at the Famous Spiegeltent in St Andrew Square on August 17 at 11pm. The band is led by drummer John Rae, who is now resident in Wellington, and includes saxophonists Martin Kershaw and John Burgess and a string quartet, and plays original music and compositions by jazz greats Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk.

The Scots Fiddle Festival is inviting talented young fiddlers aged 12 to 18 to take part in a project that will culminate in a performance during the festival’s flagship Saturday concert at the Queen’s Hall in Edinburgh in November and a recording at a top Edinburgh studio. Participants will work with professional musicians to develop skills and gain confidence in arranging, learning by ear, working as a group, and talking to audiences. Participation is free. All workshops will take place in Edinburgh but invitations are open to musicians from all over Scotland. Applications should arrive by August 24. Auditions will be held on August 30 and September 6.
