Fèis Rois is hosting three events during this year’s Blas festival of traditional music, which takes place across the Highlands from September 4 to 12. The Dingwall-based organisation encourages and nurtures young musicians around the year and this year celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Kiltearn Fiddlers, an awarding-winning performance group that emerged from a weekly Fèis Rois fiddle class, with a concert featuring former members Lauren MacColl, of fiddle group Rant, Katie MacKenzie and Graham MacKenzie at Diamond Jubilee Hall, Evanton on Friday, September 4. The following evening a ceilidh takes place at Dingwall Town Hall and on Sunday, September 6 the Highland Youth Arts Hub stages a showcase at Ironworks, Inverness from 2-5pm.

Twenty-first century medicine show Sheesham and Lotus & Son, pictured, play a series of Scottish dates in September. The Canadian trio have been described as “the new kings of old-time” and their album 1929 earned them an invitation to appear at one of Europe’s most prestigious music festivals, Tønder in Denmark, in 2014, after which they were immediately booked for a headlining appearance this year. They play at Harbour Arts Centre, Irvine (September 6); Old Library, Kilbarchan (8th); Acoustic Music Club, Kirkcaldy (10th); Eastgate Theatre, Peebles (11th); and Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline (12th).

Edinburgh Blues Club springs back into action after the summer break with two concerts during September. Scotland’s own Gerry Jablonski Band return to the club’s home venue, the Voodoo Rooms on Saturday, September 5, following a well-received appearance in March, with support this time from the Simon Brett Band. Then, on Thursday, September 17, the club welcomes one of the few remaining original Louisiana bluesmen, singer, guitarist and harmonica player Lil’ Jimmy Reed, who earned his stage name when he stepped in for the real Jimmy Reed after this inspiration to Elvis Presley and the Rolling Stones enjoyed a refreshment too many.

Edinburgh Americana promoters Lonesome Highway have announced two concerts for September. Texan Hayes Carll, whose real life tales and wry observations scored a big success on his previous visit to the capital, appears at the Voodoo Rooms on Sunday, September 6, with Nashville-based Andrew Combs, a singer-songwriter in the storytelling style of Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, following him into the same venue on Thursday, September 10.
