The Kora Band, which features musicians from Seattle, Chicago, New York, and London, brings its unique combination of jazz and West African music to the Jazz Bar, Edinburgh on October 14 as part of a six date UK tour to mark the release of its new album, New Cities, on Whirlwind Recordings. The band was formed in 2008 by pianist Andrew Oliver, who heard a kora, the 21-string African harp, being played in Senegal while on a West African tour with the U.S. State Department and was inspired to seek out Kane Mathis, a kora player based in New York. As well as piano and kora, the band includes trumpet, bass and drums and its sound has been described as “mesmerizing” and “refreshing”.
