PYE Hastings, the Tomintoul-based songwriter, singer and guitarist with prog rock veterans Caravan, has released his first solo album at the age of seventy. The album, entitled From the Half House, comprises ten new tracks written by Hastings and features his brother, jazz saxophonist/flautist Jimmy Hastings and Soft Machine guitarist John Etheridge as well as current Caravan members, keyboardist Jan Schelhaas and drummer Mark Walker. It has been released with assistance from Pledge Music and advance purchases by fans of Caravan, who released their first album in 1969 and remain active, with dates lined up in France during August and in the UK in November.

GLASGOW garage rock legends The Primevals have a new album, Dislocation, out of their own Triple Wide label, with a launch event scheduled for the city's Hug & Pint venue on July 28. The album has cover art by political cartoonist Lorna Miller and guest appearances by trumpeter Robert Henderson and the band's former bassist John Honeyman on organ. The twelve tracks are all composed by frontman Michael Rooney, with the assistance of guitarist Tom Rafferty on one cut and Richard Mazda, the producer of the band's classic 1986 album, Soundhole, on another.

SOUNDHOUSE, the organisation behind the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh’s Monday music presentations, is staging an international jazz double bill at La Belle Angele in the capital’s Cowgate on Monday, July 3. Canadian electro-acoustic-with-strings band Ron Davis and SymphRONica return to Scotland following successful appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe and in Glasgow last year. The band created a huge hit at the Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015 and come to Edinburgh direct from appearing at the celebrations for Canada Day 150 in Trafalgar Square, London. They will be joined by Manchester-based improvising collective Artephis, whose music has been likened to cutting edge innovators including Christian Scott, Bill Laurance, Antonio Sanchez’ Migration Band, and Brian Blade & The Fellowship.

CLOSE harmony duo Cathy Frank and Gerda Pickin - aka Late Bloomers – will be the latest act to feature in a house concert for Celtic Music Radio when they appear at the station’s studios in Admiral Street, Kinning Park, Glasgow on Thursday, July 6. The duo, who present folk, blues and bluegrass music with guitar, banjo and concertina accompaniment, bring forty years’ experience to the stage, having played solo and in various bands at concerts, festivals and folk clubs.
