Verdict: Four stars
PAUL Weller continued to remain effortlessly cool as he rocked out the SSE Hydro on Sunday night.
Now 59, the Modfather has created music under several hats from The Style Council and The Jam to his later solo years but the one thing which remains is his talent to command a stage with his soulful voice and rock star persona.
He promised, “We are going to be playing all the songs from all the decades,” and he did just that, kicking the show off with the upbeat From The Floorboards Up.
Showing his versatility as an artist, he ditched his trusty guitar to take over the piano for Saturns Pattern.
Long Long Road from his latest album offering A Kind Revolution reminded his fans why they continue to support Paul.
His voice was flawless on the ballad which has the potential to become a fan favourite.
As expected with a Weller gig, it was the well-known hits which caught the audience’s attention.
The Jam smash, Man in the Corner Shop was a particular highlight.
Wild Wood single Hung Up, The Style Council’s Shout To The Top and The Jam classic The Eton Rifles were also served up by the charismatic star to fans eager for the nostalgia.
Weller first showed his talent in the 70s but unlike his contemporaries of that era, he’s adapted and his music offering has endorsed different genres which is why his career has successfully spanned the decades.
You Do Something to Me is an example of how he moved with the times and the hit went down beautifully as he performed it on the SSE Hydro stage.
His encore included English Rose, Wild Wood, That’s Entertainment and Broken Stones.
But it was the iconic Town Called Malice that finished off a show which was one of Paul’s best sets to date.
