ARTISTS Sam Bakewell, Juli Bolaños-Durman, Jessica Harrison, Marcin Rusak and Laura Youngson Coll have been selected for Jerwood Makers Open 2017.
Each artist will receive an award of £7,500 to realise and make new work which will be shown in a group exhibition as part of the Jerwood Visual Arts programme at Jerwood Space in London next summer, before touring.
Before completing an MFA in Glass at the University of Edinburgh in 2013, designer Juli Bolaños-Durman originally trained in graphic design and worked in mixed media. She will "explore the journey of transformation which takes place as she converts ordinary objects into objets d’art."
The artists were selected by panel comprising Deirdre Figueiredo MBE, director of Craftspace, Skinder Hundal, CEO and director of New Art Exchange, Geoffrey Mann, artist and programme director, glass, at Edinburgh College of Art, artist Clare Twomey, and Sarah Williams, head of programme at Jerwood Visual Arts.

A MAJOR new show at the Studio Pavilion in Glasgow's Charles Rennie Mackintosh-designed House for an Art Lover opens next month.
The exhibition of designer Bernat Klein's last body of work from 2012 will be the first time his work has been shown in the west of Scotland. The show is a series of 40 paintings based on the colour wheel. It opens on December 17 and runs through until March 2017.
Klein (1922-2014) was born in Serbia in 1922, studied at Leeds University and moved to Scottish Borders in 1950, when the firm he was working for, Munrospun, relocated from Edinburgh to Galashiels.
He then set up his own business, creating the exotic tweed and mohair fabrics that would become his signature. He found success when his work was taken up by fashion houses including Chanel, Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent.
Klein was appointed CBE in 1973. He was a member of the Scottish committee of the Council of Industrial Design (1965–71) and of the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland (1980–87). He retired in 1992. He wrote two books, Eye for Colour (1965) and Design Matters (1976), and his archive, consisting of more than 1,800 items ranging from sketches for his designs to finished garments, photographs, catalogues, paintings and tapestries, was acquired by National Museums Scotland, while his textiles archive is at Heriot Watt University.

THE Scottish Awards for New Music, which "celebrate and champion composers, musicians, sound artists and ensembles that are making innovative and experimental new music" are open for entries.
Created by New Music Scotland, they have several categories, including Electroacoustic/Sound Art Work, Small/Medium Scale New Work, Large Scale New Work, Recorded New Work, Award for Innovation, Prize for Collaboration, Community/Education project, Achievement in New Music and New Music Performer(s) of the Year.
