THE Pier Arts Centre in Stromness has been mounting a biennial show of recent Orcadian graduates since it opened in 1979. A platform for new artists, it is all-inclusive and non-selective. “We try to include everyone if we can,” says curator Andrew Parkinson, “People who’ve either had their secondary education in Orkney before going off to art college or people who’ve come to Orkney to study at the University of the Highlands and Islands.”

This year’s batch of ten graduates are a typically varied bunch, with degree specialisms ranging from from photography and jewellery to painting and landscape architecture. Artists include Rachel Blair, Susan Boyd, Anna Clark, Erlend Firth, Leanne Fischler, Emma Fraser, Russell Gilmour, Samantha Marwick, Charlotte Slater and Kirstin Wishart.
