THE 148km (92 miles) between Inverness and Applecross is one of Scotland’s most spectacular routes, with scenery of breathtaking beauty around almost every corner. Heading west from Inverness, the initial stage of the journey really whets the appetite for what lies ahead. Wild moorland, gorgeous lochs and colossal mountains are all on show, perfectly illustrating this wonderful country.
This scenery is perhaps best exemplified by the 27km (17 mile) stretch between Kinlochewe and the coastal splendour of Shieldaig. En route, iconic peaks such as Beinn Eighe, Liathach and Beinn Alligin strike skywards above Upper Loch Torridon. The final 40km (25 miles) across the remote peninsula of Applecross travel along single-track road, with the exceptional views extending to Raasay and the sawtooth outline of Skye’s Cuillin Ridge.
