When I was a student first time around in the 1970s, my flatmates said I was always ahead of the curve. As one friend from these far off days at Dunfermline College of Physical Education (the old 'Dumf') recently reminded me, I was the first person in college to own a pair of trainers… 

Now, more than 40 years on, I have packed my Sketchers and am heading back to university to study for an MA in TV Fiction Writing at Glasgow Caledonian University.

I am technically 'retired', but last year I had a helter-skelter time directing the award-winning Whysman Festival, a year-long celebration of the life and work of my father, George Wyllie, who died last May at the age of 90.

Even though I have been told I am the oldest person to study on this course, my friends say I am still ahead of the curve...
