But four years on, Taylor will be hoping to become the country's golden boy when he steps into the squared circle at Glasgow 2014.
Benson has already won two Scottish titles and the British Championship.
However, this year Team Scotland faces their toughest challenge yet as some of the best amateurs from across the world will be coming to the SECC to spoil Scotland's party.
The energetic and charismatic fighter from the Gorbals will once again represent Scotland at the 56kg level, four years after making him Commonwealth Games debut in Delhi.
The 22-year-old fighter's journey to the Commonwealth Games began when he was 13 when he started attending boxing classes at Meadowbank Amateur Boxing Club in the east end of the city.
Nine of the 10 fighters have been selected, with only the 69kg left to be decided.
Over the last couple of years, Scottish fighters have been training hard and competing in high profile bouts and, with the added incentive of the games taking place in their own backyard, these athletes have been extra determined to secure their place on Team Scotland.
