Promises too easily made

I ENJOYED David J Crawford's letter (June 9) exposing the shortcomings of the NHS caused by individuals who will never need to use that service because they, by wealth and/or social position, can bypass waiting lists.

Street of shame?

TELL me again how algorithms work. I’ve just typed Sauchiehall into a document and my spellchecker suggests it would be more accurate to use either Whitehall, Baluchistan, Unchallenging or Hallucinate.

Just the ticket for airlines?

AS an airline shareholder, I have been following the current railway industrial dispute in the south of England with some interest. It seems the bone of contention between unions and management is the safety function of guards – a function which the employers claim is used so infrequently that it doesn't make economic sense to retain.

An argument against democracy

REBECCA McQuillan’s article ("Why as a republican, I am glad we still have a monarchy" The Herald, November 30), is, essentially, an argument against democracy. Let us deny the people the right to choose because they might make the wrong choice.

Letters: Food for thought

REFUGEES are fleeing from war and poverty. Wealthy nations such as Britain, France, Russia and the United States are steeping in as peacekeepers, attacking so-called Islamic State and others and, at the same time, doing their best to physically stem the flow of immigrants. Surely the time has come for the wealthy nations to bombard the poorer nations with food, assistance and resources with which to rebuild their infrastructure and alleviate poverty.

My dismay at church response

I READ with shame that the survivors of abuse once again have been let down by the Hierarchy of the Catholic Church. (“Abuse report author says Church is ignoring victims”, The Herald, November 3). As a Catholic what can I do but wonder - if Jesus was here on earth now what would he have to say about the leadership of the church in Scotland? Who speaks up for the broken, the bruised and the vulnerable?
