French director Mathieu Kassovitz has reportedly already dismissed Babylon AD as "pure violence and stupidity", and audiences are likely to share his sentiments. Set in the not-too-distant future, the film follows mercenary-for-hire Toorop (Vin Diesel) as he attempts to deliver a mysterious woman named Aurora (Melanie Thierry) and her guardian Sister Rebeka (Michelle Yeoh) from "New Russia" to New York, while slowly realising that she may be mankind's last hope. Kassovitz's film hints at big ideas, touching on issues including global warming, people trafficking and cloning, but lacks the intelligence or coherence to back them up. Instead, it's a pale imitation of far better movies that's only worth sticking with to see how bad it gets.
