New Scottish baccalaureate qualifications could be expanded to include a range of subjects, the Scottish Government will announce today.

Fiona Hyslop, the Education Secretary, said "overwhelming" interest in the new qualifications - set to be introduced in 2010 - had prompted officials to look at providing baccalaureate awards in geography, history and art as well as science and languages.

The Scottish Language Baccalaureate and the Scottish Science Baccalaureate have been designed for the brightest pupils in S5 and S6.

The subjects were chosen because of a decline in the number of pupils studying them.
