A blaze devastated a five- storey block of flats under construction on a new housing development in Glasgow last night.
The George Wimpey apartment block on the Kelvindale Glade development off Clevedon Road was devastated by the fire which was being investigated by Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire last night.
Residents raised the alert at around 7.40pm as flames engulfed the apartment block which was unoccupied.
Five appliances from Maryhill, Yorkhill, Knightswood and Cowcaddens community fire stations were needed to tackle the blaze.
One local resident said: "It is a very good job that there was nobody inside, otherwise it would have been carnage.
"I was about three-quarters- of-a-mile from it and I could feel the heat."
Householders in some parts of Kelvindale were without water while others saw a dramatic drop in pressure as firemen drew off large amounts from the mains to tackle the blaze.
A fire service spokesman said: "Upon arrival the incident commander was faced with a well-developed fire within a building under construction.
"The structure was surrounded by scaffolding which had started to buckle due to the intensity of the heat from the fire."
An adjacent four-storey building was evacuated as a precaution.
