SEXTET

This is Claire Quigley’s contribution to Spellwinders, a lively anthology commissioned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Glasgow Jazz Festival. The book is edited by Jim Carruth, chairman of St Mungo’s Mirrorball, Glasgow’s network of poets, and published by Dreadful Night Press. Ms Quigley is a freelance photographer from Glasgow and was awarded an Edwin Morgan Travel Bursary for a project involving poems and photographs on the theme of “A Dry Atlantis – Britain and Rising Sea Levels.”

Spellwinder in the spotlit dark with reed-blown incantations summons music from the air

holds it, swaying at arm’s length snake charmer with the snake until, head back eyes shut he lets it in and each of them

in turn, possessed hands, bodies moved the way it wills: men set to music.
