Why can't we cheer on artists the same way as athletes?

In the wake of Australia's disappointing performance in the Olympics, during which they pluckily coined the phrase "silver is the new gold", one Aussie had the right idea.

What her country should concentrate on now, she said, was literature and poetry.

It was a new twist on the old adage, namely, if you can't beat them, go off and do something completely different. Those of us whose darkest hours at school were spent on the hockey pitch and gym floor learned that lesson early, though for me the stigma of being a physical failure has yet to wear off. At the time, the consolation of escaping into a good book was just that – consolation, not retaliation.
