The author of Any Human Heart was born in Ghana of Scots parentage, and educated at Gordonstoun in Moray (an experience which was the subject of his memoir School Ties). Though he now lives in London, he once said: "If someone asks me what nationality I am, I unhesitatingly say I'm Scottish."
