TOM Weir, MBE (1914-2006), was a climber and author who became one Scotland's best-loved broadcasters through his TV series, Weir's Way.

Here he is fondly remembered by family friend Anne Murray, who faithfully evokes his habit of describing anything he enjoyed as "the best yet".

FOR TOM WEIR

For Tom, life begins every day:

Hitherto unwalked

It spreads a new task to savour,

Unwinds a new track to travel.

Today will be, 'The last day yet!'

Leaping under the brightest sun;

Lingering with the sweetest singing birds,

Coloured with a spring's new green

It will be a clear pool to swim in,

An untrodden hill to climb

And should the rain clouds, racing, gather,

The wildness of the storm,

The exuberance of the reeling sky

The dervish dancing of the wind,

Will be, 'The best yet!'

And at the day's end

The fire heaping through shadows

Will be, 'The best yet!'

Abolishing darkness,

Severing night;

Giving houseroom to honour flowering

As rain beats down the hills,

Astonishing walks,

Prodding flames higher.
