NOT everyone will agree with Alan MacGillivray's argument that Spain has in some way let down Scotland with its view on the country's potential EU membership.

But he makes an emotional case, citing historic factors.

INGRATITUDE

When the good Sir James at Teba

Threw the heart of Bruce before him

Into the throng of yet-unborn Spain's enemies

And rode to death, fighting its cause,

He did not think a future Spain

Would selfishly rebuff his nation's claim,

Denying the right already won by him

And that noble heart at Bannockburn.

When a company of Scotland's common men

Joined hearts supporting Spanish freedom,

Meeting the Fascist fire on dusty hillsides,

They did not know a future Spain

Would blank their nation's entry

Into a newer International Brigade,

Making a mockery of La Pasionaria's

Outstretched arms beside the Clyde.
