Orpheus: The Song Of Life by Ann Wroe (Pimlico, £14.99)

Wroe is a sensitive and imaginative writer and she gives her imagination free rein in this account of the mythical figure of Orpheus, tracing the ways different ages have employed his image – sometimes as a king, sometimes as a vegetarian naturalist – and whether he can be said ever to have been a real-life individual.
