Philip Coggan: Paper Promises (Allen Lane)

If you are inclined, as many Scots are, to a rather negative view of the future, then Paper Promises is the book for you.

The strapline might have read: "We're all doomed!". Philip Coggan's thesis is that since the collapse of the Bretton Wood's gold-based financial system in 1971, we have all been living on tick. Now it is finally time to pay back, and we have absolutely no way of doing so. The sovereign debt crisis cannot be resolved by Europe alone.
