Rose Tremain: Merivel (Chatto & Windus)

In Sir Robert Merivel, physician to King Charles II and a man of large and rash appetites, Rose Tremain found the kind of character most novelists can only dream of.

Rambunctious and thoughtful, with a conscience as big as his hunger for life, he lit up Restoration, the first of his two-part story, like a firework display of one. In this sequel, which picks the story up 15 years later, the pyrotechnic display continues, although as a man well into his fifties, Merivel is rather more subdued and reflective.
