After the painfully threadbare 27 Dresses and the clunky Made of Honour comes another wedding comedy that's about as much fun as divorce. Here's the weird thing, or one of the weird things, about director Gary Winick's picture. It has as its leading ladies two likeable young actresses, Kate "Daughter of Goldie Hawn" Hudson and Anne Hathaway. They play lifelong friends, Liv and Emma, who become enemies when they both want the same New York venue on the same day for their weddings.
Candice Bergen is the queen bitch wedding planner charged with making both sets of dreams come true. Lots of potential for screwball comedy, you'd think, but instead what is served up is a deeply unappetising, wholly charmless, seven-tiered confection of every mad-bride cliche in the book, garnished with lots of eardrum-shattering screaming. Only take husbands and partners to this movie if you want them to be left in the same state.
