LANARKSHIRE-based Scotshield Fire & Security Systems has won a multi-million-pound contract for the new South Glasgow Hospitals campus at Govan, which will involve installation of more than 16,000 fire detection devices.

The fire safety system contract, which has a four-year duration, will also involve installation of more than 12.4 miles of cable.

The South Glasgow development, on the site of the Southern General, will be the largest hospital campus in Europe. It will offer maternity, children's and adult acute services on one campus, and include the biggest critical care complex and one of the biggest emergency departments in Scotland.

Airdrie-based Scotshield, which employs more than 200 people and is majority-owned by managing director Tony Kane, said it had been "appointed to install a first-class fire-safety system throughout the facility".

It added: "(This) will see in excess of 16,000 state-of-the-art, fire-detection devices fitted to protect patients, staff and the new infrastructure itself following its completion in 2015."

Scotshield has already installed the fire alarm system within the new £90 million laboratory, which forms part of the South Glasgow campus.

It said it would have five staff members on site at Govan throughout the contract. It added this commitment would at times increase to about 30 staff and operatives "to achieve crucial programme dates" of the overall £842m South Glasgow campus build programme.

Michael MacBean, business development director at Scotshield, said: "This multimillion-pound contract for the new South Glasgow Hospitals is one of the most high-profile contracts currently under way in Scotland."

He added: "Public buildings such as hospitals, especially on the enormous scale of the new South Glasgow Hospitals can be a hugely challenging and complex task, given the very nature of their use.

"However, with more than 20 years' experience across the sector we will deliver a system that ensures the safety of this facility for generations to come."

A spokeswoman for Scotshield declined to reveal the exact value of its South Glasgow contract, saying this was "commercially sensitive". Scotshield has won contracts previously for Victoria Hospital in Fife and Midpark Hospital in Dumfries.
