A SCOTTISH newsagent has set up a pop-up shop and website to sell the final print edition of The Dandy.

Des Barr, of Sinclair Barr Newsagents, has invested more than £100,000 in buying stock of the famous comic and hopes to sell thousands of the £3.99 edition in the run-up to Christmas.

Mr Barr opened the temporary outlet at Braehead Shopping Centre near Glasgow yesterday and shifted more than 1000 copies in the first few hours of trading.

The dedicated website – www.lasteverdandy.com – has also been receiving hits from around the world.

Mr Barr said he is astounded at how quickly the comic is being snapped up.

He decided to invest in buying up stocks of The Dandy after experiencing huge interest from his customers in Paisley. A leafleting and online campaign produced more than 700 orders in a matter of days.

Mr Barr said Braehead approving plans for the shop had been the catalyst for the investment. He added: "Things have got off to an incredible start at Braehead with kids and adults keen to get a copy.

"We are hopeful as more people find out about the last [print] edition of The Dandy then we will sell more. One customer arrived at Edinburgh Airport from New York and heard about it on the radio then drove to Braehead to get copies to take to America."

Braehead's general manager, Peter Beagley, said: "We must be the only shopping centre in the country with a pop-up shop selling only one item. There appears to be great demand and I'm sure Des will do well."
