THE new chairwoman of Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) is calling for an improvement in the careers advice given to young people.

Nora Senior, who is also the executive chairwoman of UK regions at public relations firm Weber Shandwick, believes that better support must be given during education to make sure there is a good supply of talent coming through.

Ms Senior, the first woman to chair SCC in its 64-year history, said: "Our businesses need the right people, which means fully overhauling our careers service to ensure that young people have support throughout their education to make meaningful choices about what and how they study."

Her plans for the body include enhancing its international connections through the global network of Chambers.

She also believes improvements in business infrastructure are needed, including areas such as transport and broadband.

Ms Senior added: "The Chamber of Commerce brand is a truly global one, and under my leadership SCC will make full use of the international connections that we have through the global network of Chambers to enable Scottish businesses to grow their international reach.

"Businesses in Scotland can deliver growth – but improvements to the business environment are necessary to ensure that they can operate at full stretch."
