THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had 2681 store hoggs and feeding ewes forward at their weekly sale in Longtown on Tuesday when trade was animated.

Top prices and averages for hoggs were: Suffolks to £65.50 and averaged £50.21; Texels £66.50 and £49.47; Greyfaces £62.50 and £40.51; Hill Cheviots £50 and £34.31; Blackfaces £48.50 and £31.26.

Wallets Marts sold 1361 prime hoggs in Castle Douglas on Tuesday to a top of £80 per head and 205.1p per kg to average 152.5p.

There were also 538 cast sheep that sold to £83 for a Beltex ewe and averaged £41.40.

Messrs Craig Wilson Ltd sold 35 prime heifers at Ayr on Tuesday to a top of 228p per kg and an average of 210.8p or £1161.16 per head, while six prime bullocks peaked at 217p and levelled at 209p or £1215.84.

Five young bulls averaged 191.6p or £1197.63.

In the rough ring, some 56 beef cows averaged 139.8p and 115 dairy cows levelled at 111.6p. Ten bulls averaged 143.2p. Another large show of 24 dairy cattle was topped by a Holstein Heifer at £2400 and averaged £1691 (+£51 on the week).

The firm went on to sell 1092 prime hoggs in Newton Stewart yesterday to a top of £82 and 202.5p to average 159.4p.

The 407 cast sheep forward saw ewes sell to £75 for Suffolks and £52 for Blackfaces.

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had 49 prime cattle forward at their weekly sale in Dumfries yesterday, when bullocks sold to 214.5p  and averaged 200.8p, while heifers peaked at 231.5p and levelled at 210.1p.

There were 56 OTM cattle presented in the rough ring, with beef cows averaging 134.2p and dairy cows levelling at 119.1p.

The firm also sold 603 prime hoggs to a top of £93.50 and 181p to average 155.2p.

The 478 cast sheep forward were £4 easier on the week, with heavy ewes selling to £86.50 for Suffolks and averaging £50.20, while light ewes peaked at £60.50 for Cheviots and levelled at £26.31.
