THE Bottom Line was given an insight into the positive mental thinking that inspired Harry Brown to build Chisholm Hunter into one of Scotland's biggest independent jewellers.

Expanding on his observation that recession has not been a barrier to the growth of his business in recent years, Mr Brown cited the can-do attitude shown by pioneers such as car retailer Arnold Clark, who started his company in the austere aftermath of the Second World War.

The jeweller also shared one the key motivational phrases he uses with staff: "You're here for a great time, not a long time."

Wise words indeed.

Bayern outshone?

A GROUP of teenage autograph hunters congregated outside the Landmark Hotel in Marylebone, London, as bosses from ScottishPower owner Iberdrola presented its latest financial results to analysts this week.

Rumours that members of the Bayern Munich football team - who were also staying at the hotel ahead of their match with Arsenal - were angry at being overshadowed by some of the biggest stars in the utilities sector, could not be verified at the time of going to press.

First impressions

WE could have perhaps made a better impression on Peter Lederer, esteemed Diageo director and Gleneagles chairman, when we arrived at the Corinthian in Glasgow as the drinks giant prepared to launch its £5 million youth training programme.

Mr Lederer extended a warm greeting to our correspondent as he hurriedly made his way to the gents before the presentation began.

"You're not leaving already, are you?!" Mr Lederer quipped.

Keeping the jersey

ROYAL Bank of Scotland chief executive Ross McEwan was asked in an online question and answer session whether he would remove the bank's logo from the shirts of the Scotland rugby team.

"It's bad enough watching Scotland playing rugby without being reminded of the £37 billion bailout that funds the million pound salaries," his interlocutor complained.

"No" came the sharp reply.
