ROTHESAY-BASED Bute Fabrics has received orders worth more than £100,000 for its 100% wool tartan, designed and woven on the island in the Firth of Clyde.

The firm has responded to growing demand for the tartan by investing in a new loom at its mill, allowing it to broaden its design options and double its capacity for tucked-edge tartan.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise has supported the business by providing £200,000 loan last year, which has allowed it to develop new products, new markets and fund continuing growth.

Since launching its latest range last year, Bute Fabrics has woven tartan for clients such as The Society of William Wallace, The Enable Charity, St Mirren Corporate, the Newlands family, Apollo 9's 50th anniversary, RAF Kinloss and Dunan's Castle restoration.
