Scottish entrepreneur John Weir and his family have set up a charitable foundation and their first golf event will be held on the course at Gleneagles which will play host to the Ryder Cup later this year.

Born in the west of Scotland, Mr Weir operated a number of motor industry businesses in the east and north of Scotland. After selling up in 2012, he and his wife Barbara, along with their son and daughter, set up the Weir Family Foundation.

Mr Weir said the driving force stemmed from the economic crisis six years ago as he felt the charitable sector, which represents a substantial part of the economy, suffered greatly due to lack of support from local government funding, and he was acutely aware of how crucial social responsibility lay with corporate business.

The sole aim of the foundation is to support a number of worthwhile smaller and lesser known Scottish charities through fundraising events. Registered last year, it has already hosted a black-tie gala ball which raised £27,000.

The Gleneagles event is being staged on the PGA Centenary Course on June 6. The main beneficiary will be Aberlour Child Care Trust, which provides help to over 6000 of Scotland's most vulnerable children, young people and their families each year.

Packages for a team of four guests includes: Coffee & bacon rolls, a round of golf on the Ryder Cup course, sup & sandwich lunch, champagne reception, black-tie dinner & wines, auction, overnight Accommodation at Gleneagles for all players.
