US medical device maker Medtronic has agreed a deal to buy Dublin-based rival Covidien in a £25.3 billion cash and shares transaction that will see the enlarged firm employ more than 87,000 staff and have a presence in 150 countries.

The new firm will have its corporate headquarters in Ireland, which has a lower corporate tax rate than the US.
