WELDEX the Scottish crawler crane hire heavyweight, has appointed a senior industrialist to oversee its push for growth at home and overseas.

Bill Caplan has joined Inverness-based Weldex as chairman of the company's board after holding senior positions in corporations with big international operations.

Mr Caplan was an executive director of Aggreko, the Glasgow-based power firm, from 2008 to 2013.

He was responsible for Aggreko's contract with the London 2012 Olympics and also led the expansion of its business into areas including Russia and Central Asia.

Before joining Aggreko, Mr Caplan spent 18 years working for logistics giant UPS, including a spell as chief operating officer for supply chain in Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific.

Mr Caplan said he was delighted to be joining Weldex at an exciting stage in its development.

"It is an ambitious business with strong market positions and I look forward to contributing to its ongoing success," said Mr Caplan.

He joins Weldex four years after the Dunedin Capital Partners private equity firm backed a £55 million management buyout of the business.

Nicol Fraser, partner at Dunedin and board member at Weldex, said" The company's focus remains on investing in its fleet of modern cranes to meet continuing customer demand, and we look forward to working with Bill to further strengthen the company's position as the largest crawler crane hire company in the UK."

Mr Caplan succeeds Simon Miller as chairman of Weldex.
